Full Frame Camera or Not

So.. I have the Canon Rebel XTI camera. I miss the detailed pictures of my Canon AE-1 from a the film days. The AE-1 produced much better pictures than the digital cameras today. So,will a Canon 5D Full Frame camera really make the difference?
